Questions & Answers
Straight answers from the Squad on the Banger.
What is the Googan Squad Banger?
The Banger is a squarebill crankbait built for shallow water and heavy cover. Its square bill deflects off rocks, wood, docks and stumps, which helps prevent snags and creates the erratic, darting action that triggers reaction bites. It has a loud rattle on most models and sticky-sharp Mustad Triple Grip hooks. Each pack includes one bait.
How deep does the Banger run, and which size should I buy?
The Original Banger is 2 1/4" and 3/8 oz, runs 2-5 ft deep, rattles, and has #4 Mustad hooks. The Flat is 2 1/2" and 1/2 oz, runs 3-6 ft deep, rattles, and has #4 hooks. The Mini is 2" and 1/4 oz, runs 1-4 ft deep, and has #8 hooks with no rattle, a quieter choice for pressured fish and small ponds.
How do you fish a squarebill crankbait?
Cast past shallow cover and reel the squarebill down so it bumps into rocks, stumps, wood and dock posts. Each time it deflects, it darts to the side, which is when most strikes happen. Use a steady retrieve to cover water, slow down to keep it in contact with cover, and pause briefly after a deflection to trigger following fish.
What's the difference between the Banger and the Recon?
The Banger is a shallow squarebill that runs 1-6 ft deep, depending on the model, and is built to bang into shallow cover. The Recon is a medium-diving crankbait that reaches 3-12 ft, depending on the model, for deeper docks, grass lines and drop-offs. Many anglers carry both: the Banger for shallow fish and the Recon when bass move deeper.
What are the best Banger colors?
Shad colors like Sexy Shad, Tennessee Shad, Blueback Herring and Citrus Shad imitate baitfish in clear to lightly stained water. Craw colors like Sriracha Craw, Cash Craw, Mudbug and Cornpop Craw are top picks in the spring when bass feed on crawfish. Bluegill and Perch match panfish, and Chartreuse Black Back stands out in stained water.
When and where does the Banger work best?
Squarebills shine in the spring, pre-spawn and fall, and anytime the water is warm and bass are shallow. Fish the Banger around rocks, wood, stumps and along grass edges, anywhere you can bang it into cover.
