Carolina Rig Baits

The Carolina rig is one of the best ways to cover water and find bass on the bottom, and this collection brings together the Googan Baits that come alive on it. A heavy sliding weight, a bead and a swivel go on your main line, with an 18 to 36 inch leader to the hook. The weight drags and clicks across the bottom while your bait floats and swims just above it, drawing bites from bass on points, flats, ledges and grass edges.

Baits that shine on a Carolina rig have plenty of movement on a slow drag. That's why you'll find the Krackin' Craw and Trench Hawg with their kicking claws and appendages, the Slizzard Lizard (a spring favorite around spawning flats), the big ribbon-tail Mondo Worm and the Dart soft jerkbait. Rig them Texas-style on the end of the leader so they stay weedless.

How to fish it: make a long cast, let the weight hit bottom, then sweep your rod to the side to drag it a few feet. Pause, reel up the slack and repeat. Feel for changes in the bottom like rock, shell and grass, and slow down where you get bit. Use a 1/2 to 1 oz weight, and a leader a few pounds lighter than your main line so a snag only costs you the hook.

Carolina Rig Baits FAQs

Tips on rigging, fishing and choosing the right carolina rig baits from the Googan Squad.

What is a Carolina rig?

A Carolina rig puts a heavy sliding weight, a bead and a swivel on your main line, with a 1–4 ft leader to the hook. The weight drags along the bottom while the bait floats and swims just above it, so you can cover a lot of water on points, flats and ledges.

How do you tie a Carolina rig?

Slide a 1/2–1 oz weight and a glass or plastic bead onto your main line, tie on a barrel swivel, then tie an 18"–36" leader to the swivel and an offset or wide-gap hook to the end. Rig the bait Texas-style so it stays weedless. Use a lighter leader than your main line so you only lose the hook if it snags.

Carolina rig vs Texas rig: what's the difference?

On a Texas rig the weight sits right at the bait, so it falls fast and punches into cover. On a Carolina rig the weight is separated from the bait by a leader, so the bait drifts slowly and naturally behind it. Use a Texas rig around cover and a Carolina rig to drag open bottom and find scattered fish.

What baits work best on a Carolina rig?

Baits with plenty of action on a slow drag: craws like the Krackin' Craw, creature baits like the Trench Hawg, lizards like the Slizzard Lizard, big worms like the Mondo Worm and soft jerkbaits like the Dart.

How long should a Carolina rig leader be?

18"–24" is a good all-around length. Go longer (3–4 ft) in clear water or when fish are suspended a little off the bottom, and shorter around grass or when you want the bait closer to the weight.

How do you fish a Carolina rig?

Make a long cast, let the weight hit bottom, then sweep the rod sideways to drag it a few feet, pause, and reel up the slack. Feel for rocks, shell and grass edges, and slow down where you get bites.
