Bass Mafia Cannonball Poppin' Frog

The Cannonball is a topwater popping frog built to make a scene. Its weighted body sits "butt-down" in the water, so every pop throws water and makes noise that calls bass out of thick slop and from under overhanging brush. It's 2.6" and 5/8 oz with a 4/0 hook.

Cast it over or past the cover, then give the rod short, sharp twitches so the cupped mouth pops and spits water, pausing between pops. You can also walk it side to side with steady twitches on slack line. Pause it in open pockets and along mat edges. When a fish blows up on it, wait until you feel the weight before setting the hook.

Leopard Frog, Bullfrog, Tree Frog, Cane Toad and Green Pumpkin Chartreuse look natural over grass and pads. Albino, Sexy Shad and Threadfin Shad are easy for bass to see on bright days. Matte Black and Black and Yellow give a strong silhouette in low light, and Nasty Gill and Chartreuse Perch match panfish.

Popping frogs shine from spring through fall and really heat up in the summer, when bass hold under matted grass and lily pads in warm water. Fish it over grass, pads, brush and other shallow cover, and skip it under overhanging cover and docks.
